Six short questions about the water and the house, then your details. Under a minute.

Question 1What brought you here?
Question 2Where does the house sit?

In Westchester this is the question that most often decides what kind of job it is. A house on the Hudson or the Sound can take tidal or surge water, a house in a stream valley takes river water, and a house on higher ground mostly takes groundwater or runoff. The county's own hazard plan puts only about one building in forty inside the mapped flood area, so most wet basements here are outside it.

Question 3Where did the water come from?

Clean water from a supply pipe, rainwater through a wall, and water that rose out of a river, the Sound or a drain are graded differently by the water damage trade's own standard, and the grade decides whether soaked materials can be dried or have to be cut out. Guessing wrong in either direction costs money, so an honest not sure is better than a confident guess.

Question 4How long has it been wet?

Federal guidance says material dried within 24 to 48 hours of a leak will in most cases not grow mold. Past that window the question moves from drying to finding out what has already grown, which is why this changes who we send first.

Question 5What was in the space that got wet?

What has to be removed depends on the materials as much as on the water. Carpet, pad, drywall and insulation that soaked up contaminated water usually come out. Concrete, block and framing are usually cleaned and dried where they are.

Question 6Why look into it now?

This decides what order things happen in. A closing date or a health worry moves the assessment to the front of the queue.

Local Context

Drying out a Peekskill leak before it turns into mold

A water heater that let go, a washing machine hose, a supply line under a sink, a roof that gave way in a storm: these are the everyday sources, and the drying job is much the same for each. Stop the water, extract it, measure how far it spread into walls and floors, then dry to normal readings. Ida was a quieter event here than in the south of the county. The National Weather Service's lowest Westchester report, 3.44 inches, came from just north of Peekskill, and the City recorded some localized flooding but no substantial damages.

We book the work, we never do itThis is a booking and referral service. The contractor you are matched with performs the job, carries its own license and insurance, and contracts with you directly.
Separate firms for the scope and the removalNew York bars one licensee from assessing and remediating the same property, and bars anyone from owning a stake in both firms on that job.
Licensed and insured trades onlyEvery assessor, remediator and drying crew we book holds the New York license its part of the work requires, and any mold license can be checked on the state's own public register.
Deciding

Peekskill: a drying crew or household fans?

Fans are enough when the water was clean, the spill was small, it sat on a hard floor and you caught it within hours; EPA says material dried inside 24 to 48 hours in most cases will not grow mold. A crew is worth it when water ran into walls or under flooring, soaked carpet, or came through a ceiling, because the moisture you cannot see is the moisture that grows. Tell us which it was and we will not line up a crew you do not need.

  1. Appliance leaks spread under floors

Water from a washer or dishwasher often runs beneath flooring and cabinets. That is where the meters should look.

  2. Roof leak in a storm

Weather water is not automatically treated as contaminated. A clean roof leak dried quickly is often a small job.

  3. Document it first

Photograph the water and the damaged items before drying starts. It is the record you will want later.

Questions

Peekskill questions about drying after a leak

The leak was two days ago and the room feels dry. Am I in the clear?

Maybe. Surfaces dry faster than what is behind them. A moisture meter reading on the lower walls and subfloor tells you, and a drying firm can take one.

Does Peekskill flood like the Sound Shore towns?

Not in the same way. FEMA's records show no paid flood claims in Peekskill for Ida and 32 across the life of the program. The low waterfront areas are the exception.
